Yoga poses for beginners

“Just Breathe… and let it go” that’s probably the foremost rule of yoga. And while our Prime Minister might be advocating it for Manav Kalyan (human well-being) and to spread the message of Sadbhavana (amity), you, as a beginner, must try yoga as a way to beat stress, to improve circulation, for flexibility and for inner peace. To start with, we’ve listed a few basic asanas (poses) for you that you can try it out at home.

Mountain Pose or Tadasana:

It’s a pose that helps improve posture and balance. It also tones your abdominal muscles. It improves blood circulation and also helps relieve constipation and gas formation – Video

How to do it: - Stand tall with your feet together - Hang your arms beside the torso - Close your eyes - Keep your breathing smooth and even - Hold the pose for up to one minute or up to 5 to 10 breaths

Child’s Pose or Balasana:

It releases tension in the back and shoulders. It also helps calming the mind and thereby alleviating stress and anxiety – Video

How to do it: - Kneel on the floor - Touch your big toes together and sit on your heels, then separate your knees about as wide as your hips - Bring your torso to rest between the thighs - Let your forehead touch the floor - Stretch the arms out in front of you and hold the position for up to a minute

Downward Facing Dog or Adho Mukah Svanasana:

It brings strength throughout the body, especially the spine, arms, shoulders and legs. Besides, this pose will leave you energised and get you up and about – Video

How to do it: - Get on all fours with hands directly under shoulders, knees under hips (like a table) - Lift the hips up, straighten the knees and elbows, so your body looks like an inverted V - Hold the downward dog pose and take long deep breaths - Exhale. Bend the knees, return to table pose and repeat

What to wear: You can go for a capri with a bright, colourful dual-layered top. Or you can wear a loose top and pair it with any of our fabulous sports bra.
